Honar means art in Persian. HONAR is offering art classes to students of different ages to bring art to their lives. When I was a child, art was not an important subject at school. It was the first subject to be cut from schools. And yet now we know the role of art in children’s development is huge. Art has helped me a lot along the way. Expressing my feelings through art is the only therapy that works for me. Having a visual strength, I can simplify and understand difficult concepts. Integrating any type of art with other subjects would always make those subjects more interesting for me. For example, I’m not a big fan of learning languages, but I’d learn a language by singing songs in that language or I’d remember sociological and cultural matters if I’ve seen a documentary or a movie about them. Finishing an art work every time means overcoming so many obstacles and therefore it helps problem solving skills in other areas. Studying art history connected me to my culture and made me interested to know more about other cultures as well. Art instruction has helped me strengthen my motor skills at an early age. The majority of my confidence and my ability to take risks comes from my artistic life. The most basic yet important role of art in my life has been composing and constructing things around me, from my furniture to what I wear and how I decorate my food. Studies have shown that students who have been regularly participating in art classes have much higher academic achievements in other fields like mathematics and physics and have won more awards in writing essays and poems than students that haven’t participated in art much.
